Growing Up
I remember always trying to soak up as much attention as I could get. It's funny now when I think about it because I was the first child, grandchild, nephew and great grandchild. I had an audience 24/7 !!! Man I pity my family! When I watch my mom's famous home videos - you know the ones with the shaky camera - there is so much footage of me dancing and singing it's crazy.
I was born on the upper West Side of Manhattan. I learned to walk going up and down 79th street with a hand holding me up by my overalls. When I was 10 months old, I was so determined to get loose that I just started to go at it alone. Not long after we moved to Long Island.
I had such a crazy imagination; it was like every situation that I was in was a scene in a movie. There was this one time when I was in the principal's office in elementary school and as the principal was talking to me I did not hear a word, instead I was so busy thinking about what a great shot this would make.
I recently graduated from the Long Island High School for the Arts. When I was out of town working on my music they allowed me to be home schooled. When I was on the set of a TV show or on the set of "The Clique," I was tutored like all the other young actors. I just turned 18 so no more worries about that. I am now attending the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts.
My Parents
I think the biggest influence my dad had on me was through music. [link to Music page] Dad was also an English major and loves to write poetry, music and scripts. So, yeah, I guess the guy had a huge influence on me!!! My mom??? Ha! What inspires me about my mom is that she is extremely persistent and driven. She has been this way her whole life. I have definitely inherited that quality from her. She has always supported my ideas and encouraged me to live outside the box.
My parents exposed me to all types of film and media, even R rated movies! I know their approach may not have been conventional, but I think it was irreplaceable for me. They wanted me to understand everything about life so they enlightened me to all types of artistic and thought -provoking film, music and art. I was the luckiest little kid who got to see Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Elvis Costello, Ringo Starr, Tori Amos, James Taylor, Pearl Jam, Cream, Hall & Oates, Semisonic -way too many to list!
And my brother Nikko...
I've lost all dignity!!! People always ask us if we are twins and we'll say, "NO, who do you think is older?" and for some reason they always seem to pick my pain-in-the-butt little brother! Nikko and I are three years apart. It's a perfect age difference because he's not too young to hang out with me and my friends.
There's really nothing better than having a cool little brother. It's like I always had my best friend living in the next room. Whenever I wanted someone to beat up on he was right there. We really never fight but it's no fun if I can't mess with him once in a while!!! No one else can mess with him though, just me! We always have each other's backs.
I have come to realize that the only person who can keep me grounded is myself. Your parents will teach you right from wrong but when you are old enough to be out on your own then things change. When you are making big decisions for yourself you have to think about the consequences. You have to do the right thing so you can live with yourself.
