Theatre Review: "The Playground" - Recommended
THE PLAYGROUND
RECOMMENDED
Homeless youth are given a voice—a singing voice—in Michael Leoni’s ambitious, sprawling “street rock musical” The Playground, now playing at Hollywood’s Met Theatre under the playwright’s direction.
Though The Playground could stand to lose as much as a third of its three-hour-long running time (thereby benefitting from the streamlined length and pacing of Leoni’s smash hit Elevator), the plight of its homeless protagonists and the power of the cast’s vocal performances make this patchwork quilt of a musical worth checking out.
L.A. audiences (and this reviewer) first met Leoni’s tribe of street kids in The Playground’s 2003 debut at the Complex—a considerably shorter, tighter production which featured a dozen well-known pop tunes and two original compositions by cast member Gunner Wright. A 2006 run at Deaf West Theatre replaced the twelve covers with two dozen songs by Beth Hart, Wright, and new cast member Sebastian Sage, some of them preexisting, others written for the production.
The Playground now returns to Hollywood minus the Sage compositions, their place taken by songs by Michael Montoya, cast addition Ishmael Herring, and Winston King, Jr.—a grand total of thirty-two musical numbers in all. Add to that a half dozen rap poems and considerable dialog and you have a musical that runs longer than all but the longest Broadway musicals.
A striking opening sequence on an extraordinarily detailed, trash strewn, graffiti scrawled street in a Los Angeles slum neighborhood introduces us to our cast of characters. There’s Hayden (a role originated by Leoni and now played by Keli Price), who has run away from an abusive home environment with best girlfriend Luka (Rachael Page) in tow. Pimp/songwriter Ash (Shawn Parsons) has a stable of male and female sex workers under his thumb, including wannabe songstress Star (Lexy Pantera) and sensitive rentboy Vegas (Leoni). HIV positive Mama (2006 cast member Erica Katzin) is about to give birth to a child fathered by her lover Drifter (Nick Teti). Gay teen Happy (Corbin Mayberry) has been on the street since getting caught in the same-sex act by his intolerant dad. Other street kids include Bear (Herring), Sunshine (Elwie Harris), Princess (Karly Rigbee), and Stoney (Ryan Nelson). Lindsey Gort plays well-to-do do-gooder Sam, with Deb Vancelette and Tyler Tanner appearing in a dozen or so wigs each as assorted parents, johns, and other adult characters. That virtually all of the street kids are strung out on drugs goes without saying.

With so many characters’ lives to follow, it can become tough to recall just who is who and what each character’s back story is, a feat made more challenging by the producers’ ill-advised decision not to distribute programs until after the performance. There are many reasons for audiences to have playbill in hand before and during a show, all of which ought to have overriden whatever prompted leaving us uniformed for three hours.
A too haphazard structure gets in the way of The Playground’s achieving the success Leoni’s high-intentioned concept deserves. If Jonathan Larson’s Rent can be compared to a painstakingly designed and refined urban building with a single architect, The Playground comes across more like an edifice that started small and got added onto by various builders at various times, with some rooms stuck on to the original and others replacing rooms that used to be there.
In addition, despite the large number of songs featured in The Playground, it takes twenty-minutes or so for the first full-length song to be performed, thereby breaking one of the basic rules of Musical Theater 101. By contrast, Act Two features one too-similar rock ballad after another, with little dialog in between. Rent offers a textbook example of how songs can serve to advance a musical’s plot. In contrast, the Playground’s hodgepodge of musical numbers serve mostly to reveal characters’ feelings at any given moment, those being primarily despair and anger, or a combination of both.

Fortunately, these are powerful songs which get performed by some powerful singers. Price makes for a stellar Hayden, bringing to the role the striking good looks and lean muscled physique that go with his Ford model résumé, vocal skills befitting this 2010 BMI Young Songwriter Of The Year, and acting chops to match. (If only Hayden were given a bit more than a three-day time span for his 180 degree transformation from clean-cut runaway teen to greasy, grubby, drug-addicted, hard-bitten hustler.) Big-voiced rock belters Katzin, Page, and Pantera provide vocals that are as good as it gets, though the latter two could benefit from more nuanced acting in their dialog sequences. Parsons is suitably sleazy/sexy, Leoni makes a strong impression as the probably gay-in-denial Vegas, and Gort, Harris, Herring, Mayberry, Nelson, Rigby, and Teti all do topnotch work in supporting roles. Tanner creates multiple diverse male characters, and Vancelette impresses in a series of intensely performed dramatic cameos.
Teti has choreographed several dance numbers that express through movement what the characters are experiencing in their lives on the street. Several frighteningly real sequences replicate what characters must be seeing and feeling while tweaking, and these are aided and abetted by David Goldstein’s striking lighting design.

The cast is backed up by a sensational four-piece band, double the number of musicians in the 2006 production: musical director/orchestrator Chris Raymond on guitar and piano, Joshua Charney on keyboard, Jon La Tona on bass, and Antonio Rodrigo on drums.
Goldstein has designed a simply sensational set, in addition to his extremely varied (though occasionally overambitious) lighting design. (There are probably more lighting cues than in any show I’ve reviewed on these pages. Also, actors should be reminded to “find their light” when in the spotlight.) Michèle Young’s costumes are so realistic, you could easily believe she swiped them off the backs of street people if you didn’t know better. Sound designer Nathan Kampf deserves high marks for amplifying singing voices and mixing them with instrumentals, though the decision to amp spoken dialog might be rethought. Curiously, Herring performs without amplification. Renee Lynn Smith has created the production’s excellent makeup design.
Completing the large list of behind-the-scenes The Playground personnel are production stage manager Danielle DeMasters, technical director John Toom, assistant stage manager Timothy Miller, master electrician Jason Henderson, executive producer Marco Gomez, producers Michelle Kauffer and Shoen Smith, and associate producers Sandra Nelson and Judi Jordan. The Playground is presented by An 11:11 Experiment and DOMA Theatre and Venture Hill Entertainment in association with Spare Some Change and The Hope And Union Foundation.
If The Playground remains very much a work in progress even after all these years, it nonetheless deserves applause for the musically gifted cast assembled on the Met Theatre stage, and more importantly for bringing the plight of homeless youth to dramatic, musical, highly theatrical life.

The Playground Musical Theatre Review - Spotlight on the Voices of Homeless Youth

Seventeen year old Hayden (Keli Price) is headed to Hollywood. With a talent for lyrics and a promise from an online acquaintance who claims to be a music manager, Hayden will runaway to from his abusive step-father and alcoholic mother. He flees to Los Angeles with Luka (Rachael Page), his new girlfriend who also comes from a home life plagued with neglect and abuse. But once they land in LA, nothing is as they thought. No music manager. No money. Nowhere to go.

They find themselves adopted by a group of homeless kids. Happy (Corbin Mayberry) is the first to welcome the newbies into the fold. The rejected gay son of a preacher, he is loving and accepting but harbors a secret self-destructive self-loathing. Mama (Erica Katzin) is the Mama, literally and figuratively. A sometimey guardian of the younger kids like Sunshine (Elwie Harris), Mama is eight months pregnant, an addict and determined to keep her child, despite the temptations of comfy shelters or the perfect adoptive parents waiting in the wings. The father of her child is Drifter (Nick Teti), the quintessential hustling strummer, fellow addict, ever in good spirits, and ever able to make a buck off of a kind heart or an unsuspecting tourist. Princess (Karlee Rigby) is the rich girl who ran away from an overworked, inattentive father out of rebellion. Rounding out the motley group of homeless adolescents is Star (Lexy Panterra), sex kitty, who came to LA to be a star, but ended up turning tricks for drugs and an occasional place to crash.

Star’s beau is Vegas (Michael Leoni), the cool kid, the on again, off again leader of this band of wandering youths. Like Star, he has fallen so deep into the abyss of drugs and prostitution that he can’t find his way out. He wields equal parts fear and respect among the teens as the right hand of Ash (Shawn Parsons), a failed performer and film producer turned pimp and drug dealer. Ash makes a regular habit of assessing, and hopefully inducting, new strays into his control. Ash is very interested in Hayden. Ash sees Hayden’s musical talent and immediately begins to calculate how to exploit the naïve youth.

After two days on the street, Hayden and Luka are pulled apart, and yet they both begin to fall into the same trap of despair and drugs. It remains to be seen if they will find their way back to each other before they lose their souls to the mean streets of Los Angeles.
The Playground is an inventive mash-up of a modern day Oliver Twist and Jonathan Larson’s Rent. While Hayden is at the center of the story, the piece takes time to touch upon several different stories, illuminating the spectrum of kids and circumstances that lead to kids of all types out on the street, fending for themselves.

The verdict: the bones are there. As musical theater, The Playground is long and overwritten with way too many songs, which invariable led to some pretty uninteresting lyrics after a while. The show includes musical “hits,” song outburst that are not quite solos and not quite songs. It is an interesting devise, but not especial effective. These musical hits frequently lack dramatic motivation. Folks in musicals burst into song for a reason – because mere words have become insufficient to express the moment. Here, they simply prevented the audience from becoming immersed into the story; because you are constantly being reminded that you are watching a musical.
The relationships between the characters are also indistinctly drawn. They protect each other in one scene and betray each other in the next. The tribes’ loyalties and character motivations are blurred at best.
In terms of the production, for me, the problem was the casting. Much of the cast was young and inexperienced and clearly not ready for material of this weight. This is not to say that young performers are not good; but there is something to be said for more season actors who can identify and play the subtext, as well as the text. After all, that is where the meat of the character often lies, in the subtext. Furthermore, there were a few young performers who clear saw this show as an opportunity to sing. But again, the music in musical theatre is always in service of – an extension of - the drama. This production has moments that were sheer magic peppered in between scenes and musical numbers that lack truth. I kept wishing this show would find its rhythm and get back on track, and it never quite got there.

Keli Price in "The Playground"
For me, the show’s anchors were leading man Keli Price as Hayden, as well as Nick Teti and Erica Katzin as Drifter and Mama respectively. Those were the constant, most engrossing performances of the night. Rachael Page’s Luka also possessed notable presence, giving a strong vocal performance. High marks to Designer David S. Goldstein on a remarkable, highly functional set and his ambitious lighting design. Standout musical numbers included the company number “Yesterday’s Boring”, “If I Found You” featuring Keli Price, “Finishline” featuring Nick Teti and Erica Kaztin, and the absolutely enchanting “Hiding Under Water” featuring Katzin, Page and Lexy Panterra.

Keli Price Stars in Hollywood Musical "The Playground" at the Met Theatre
THE PLAYGROUND

This musical, written and directed by Michael Leoni with songs and lyrics credited to several composers, is unlikely to make the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce sing with joy. Teens Hayden (Keli Price) and his girlfriend Luka (Rachael Page) flee abusive families to hit Hollywood and Vine, where they quickly wind up in thrall to a diabolical pimp, who puts them to work on the streets -- work that can inevitably lead to a tight schedule of doing drugs, turning tricks and becoming snaggle-toothed crack whores before you know it. For all the commendable attempts to engender a social conscience through this tale of hardship and youth, the plot itself strangely hews to the tropes of a 1970s exploitation movie, while also being hampered by a torpid pace, oddly awkward blocking and glum, identical-sounding musical numbers. Met Theatre, 1089 Oxford Ave., Hlywd.; Fri.-Sat., 8 p.m.; Sun., 7 p.m.; through Dec. 18. (323) 960-7745, plays411.net/playground. (Paul Birchall)Source: LA Weekly

Keli Price: Album "Move My Way"
Making an album doesn't happen overnight and sometimes that is a good thing. This album has been in the works for a while. The good part is that I have had the experience of working with different producers and I have learned a lot from that. I have also grown in terms of my songwriting and my voice has matured. I will be in L.A. recording some new material that I have been working on and finishing the album. I am very excited that I am getting to work with musicians and producers that I respect and admire. The songwriting process is different for everybody. For me, I usually write
the music first and then the lyrics. I write almost all my music in my bedroom because it is a comfortable environment for me and things flow. I write both Pop and Rock music. I mostly write about my own experiences. Sometimes I write about the world around me and other times I tell stories about other people and things, these stories are usually fictional. "Move My Way", the single and music video are available for download.
We also added a couple of other songs I think you will like. "If You Would Stay" and "She's Perfect".
The MP3s are available at Amazon

Aug 27, 2010 – Saturday, June 26th 2010 marked the success of the first annual I.D.E.A. Exchange, benefiting The GRAMMY Foundation. Held at one of New York’s top venues, Hudson Terrace, the purpose of this event was for social entrepreneurs and forward-thinking professionals in the creative industries to gather in the name of I.nspiration, D.iscovery, and E.nrichment through the A.rts. It was a wonderful turnout with a sophisticated crowd and great weather. A very special thank you goes out to our event partners and sponsors: Roland, Sprite, Steve Madden, Vodka Party, Zagat, JD Sports Marketing, Renaissance Meetings & Events, NVCG Management, Carnegie Hall, Tom Houseal Photography, Hudson Terrace, 20th Street Media, Empire Force Events, Red Shoe Media, Todd Pettengill & Rob Perna of 17 Black Productions, Dean Love Films, S.W.I.S.S. and our sensational musical guests.
Attendees were dazzled by the headlining act, GRAMMY Winning Drummer and Musical Director Swiss Chris. His Lite Stix performance is known to draw parallels to the wow factor of Blue Man Group and the technical prowess of the Harlem Globetrotters. Further elevating Swiss’s performances were friends, two-time GRAMMY Nominee Jay Rodriguez and Blues Guitarist Ladell Mclin. Keli Price was at the top of his game, as usual, captivating the room with his energy and upbeat melodies. Keli is a very gifted songwriter/performer and also a winner of the Abe Oleman Scholarship Award. Our dance floor was ignited by celebrity DJ YO-C, sponsored by Diesel and who flew in from Canada as well as New York’s acclaimed DJ Amoroso. The event began graciously with our first performance of the night, the operatic trip hop group, Cabiria. The host and master of ceremonies for this memorable evening was our good friend, Matthew Schwartz.
Over 50 items were donated for a world-class silent auction which was coordinated and managed by JD Sports Marketing. Among the sold pieces were: signed, framed pictures of Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, and Joe Frasier, a signed hockey puck by Wayne Gretsky, a Jets helmet signed by Joe Namath. Other items included a Bon Jovi signed masterpiece collage, Paul McCartney signed CITI Field concert commemorative collage, Donald Trump signed red neck tie, batting practice at Yankee Stadium with Yankee legends, Bruce Springsteen signed guitar, Bono signed airbrushed guitar, Steven Tyler signed airbrushed guitar, Gene Simmons signed guitar with Kiss concert tickets.
A film aspect was also incorporated into the production. The one-hundred-inch, drop down screen behind the stage at Hudson Terrace was utilized for a “mini film festival”. Film clips and trailers were submitted and showcased by Emmy Winning Documentarian/Filmmaker Dean Love of Dean Love Films, HBO and National Geographic affiliated Producer/Filmmaker Flora Sousa of Red Shoe Enterprises, and Emmy Winning Filmmaker Todd Pettengill and Partner, Rob Perna, of 17 Black Productions.
The event co-producers, EvI Enterprises and Cutting Edge Culture, are proud to have aligned with such wonderful entities in the name of music education and the arts. Concepts for the 2nd Annual I.D.E.A. Exchange are already being tossed around.

Jericho Graduate Releases Single
Keli Price, a 2009 graduate of Jericho High School, recently released his first single and video Move My Way, which is available at iTunes and wherever digital music is sold. Bonus tracks She’s Perfect and If You Would Stay will also be included in the debut single release bundle exclusively at iTunes.
Keli Price
Known to teenage girls as Chris Abeley from the Warner Brothers film The Clique, and Bobby Love from The Naked Brothers on Nickelodeon, Keli Price is excited about his new digital release. The tracks were penned by Price, including collaborating with Better Than Ezra front-man Kevin Griffin on the title track, Move My Way and on Don’t Stop Starting.
On his website, (www.keliprice.com) he talks about his parents having a major influence on his life and his career. “I think the biggest influence my dad had on me was through music,” said Price. “Dad was also an English major and loves to write poetry, music and scripts. My mom? What inspires me about my mom is that she is extremely persistent and driven. She has been this way her whole life. I have definitely inherited that quality from her. She has always supported my ideas and encouraged me to live outside the box.”
Price said that his parents exposed him to all types of film and media and wanted him to understand everything about life so they enlightened him to all types of artistic and thought -provoking film, music and art. “I was the luckiest little kid who got to see Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Elvis Costello, Ringo Starr, Tori Amos, James Taylor, Pearl Jam, Cream, Hall & Oates, Semisonic – way too many to list,” said Price.
The 19-year-old actor/singer-songwriter/model was introduced to show business as a Ford Model at the age of 4 and has appeared on the cover of the New York Times magazine for Polo/Ralph Lauren as well as campaigns for Tommy Hilfiger, The Gap, H&M, Cole Haan, Nike, Reebok, Sean John and many more. He has been seen in GQ, Vanity Fair, Esquire, Details and The New York Times.
Price continues to add to his acting résumé having just finished filming the theatrical feature, One Fall, due out in 2010.
Brenda Streitman, Price’s former teacher, said Price is “not only a talented young man, but a caring, loving, sharing human being. To meet him, speak with him, is to love him. He is a talent to be reckoned with.”

Keli Performed at the Roar For a Cure Carnival
Have U Heard attended the Roar For A Cure Carnival to support The Max Cure Foundation on Saturday, August 24th. No carnival detail was missing. There were rides, clowns, games, delicious food and amazing entertainment.
The First Annual Roar For A Cure Carnival took place to help raise money for The Max Cure Foundation and will also benefit the T.J. Martell Foundation and the Stewart Family.
The Max Cure Foundation was established in 2008. It’s primary goal is to raise $5 million for The Max Cure Fund For Pediatric Cancer Research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to underwrite the establishment of a research laboratory in the Department of Pediatrics.
Max Plotkin and Katy Stewart have both been afflicted with pediatric cancer. They both attended the carnival along with their families, friends and over 1,000 supporters including Christie Brinkley, Push Play and Keli Price.
The sexy, actor, model and musician, Keli Price performed on Saturday to support the foundation and put on a great show with some of his original songs.
Have U Heard encourages our readers to help a very worthy cause, The Max Cure Foundation reach their goal by visiting MaxCurefoundation.org and making a donation. Thank you!!
